C.F. møller merges small brick-clad houses with gable roofs into ‘villa E’ in denmark

in an undulating neighborhood in the north of Århus, Denmark, ‘villa Ε’ by CF møller architects takes shape as a large brick house with a rustic character, consisting of four smaller saddle-roof houses. the concept, materials and level of detail are inspired by the iconic Aarhus University, which was also designed by the company and is now part of the Danish architectural canon.

the house comes along following the sloping terrain of the plot CF turbines has been ‘lifted’ on three smaller buildings on two different levels. towards the road, the driveway leads down below the house to the integral garage and basement. a distinctive stone staircase leads to the entrance, which opens into the main room of the villa, a large kitchen / family room with a high curved ceiling, finished with a large skylight. from this room there is direct access to four bedrooms as well as to the garden.

the kitchen is partly built into a brick core that runs throughout the house and, together with a seat by the window on the opposite side, forms the sculptural elements in this central space. a staircase from the kitchen gives access to the living room of the villa, which is located at garden level. the living room has a sloping ceiling with moldings, which continues under the roof of the terrace to create a covered rest area. further down the stairs, through the returning core, you arrive at the lower level of the house with a hobby room, technical room, utility room and garage.

the materiality of the villa is formed by three main elements: brick, oak and natural stone. Rustic hand-painted bricks in shades of red are used for the facade and roof tiles, combined with the stone of surfaces, stairs and the inner core, while both the exterior and interior feature oak wood. on the outside it is used as a frame for the gazebos and gates. inside it gives a warm glow to the atmosphere and reappears on window sills, doors, fixtures, paneled ceilings and herringbone floors. clear natural stone used in the three bathrooms provides an elegant look.
