Ditch the goop using BoltSeal™: Mechanical compression-sealing technology

The solar industry has gone through many generations of technological development, especially over the past decade. The industry is still young, often like the Wild West, companies rise and fall as the landscape changes. Step back and you can see the different parts involved in setting up an array – electrical, rack, mounting, the list goes on.

In this article, we’ll explore one technology in particular: BoltSeal ™ by QuickBOLT – that changed the way solar energy is installed since its introduction to the market almost a decade ago.

Who is QuickBOLT?

You must have the QuickBOLT name earlier, they have been offering their unique Top Mount solutions for Asphalt Shingle roofs since they hit the scene in 2009. Top Mounts are solutions that mount over the shingle, instead of lifting and placing them underneath.

The QuickBOLT product line, also known as the Original Top Mount line, has sparked the growing effort to move away from that practice and use traditional sheet metal flashings as much as possible. We all know why shingles remedy is really tricky, but what exactly is BoltSeal ™ technology?

What is BoltSeal ™?

In simple terms, it is a mechanical compression sealing method used during the QuickBOLT installation process. BoltSeal ™ is the underlying technology that makes QuickBOLT’s Original Top Mounts work just as well as they do. Push their specialized fasteners into the Microflashing® until it is compressed into the roof, and before you have a BoltSealed ™ mount.

The fasteners are pleasant to use because they ride so smoothly and the visual / tactile feedback from the Microflashing® is a pleasant surprise. It feels like putting a wine bottle in a cork. Other Top Mount solutions do not provide the same response level during installation.

While these QuickBOLT alternatives theoretically offer many of the same benefits, they cannot deliver on the promise of the original Top Mounts because they do not offer BoltSeal ™. In fact, they couldn’t if they wanted to – it’s a proprietary installation method.

BoltSeal ™ technology has come a long way since the first generation of QuickBOLTs. The latest version, QB2, uses BoltSeal ™ so well that you can install the bolt without using any mess. ASTM testing from Intertek Lab confirms that QB2 prevents water from entering roof penetrations when BoltSealed ™ is correct.

Why closed the junk?

To clarify, junk is any roofing chemical sealant – M1, Henry’s – the stuff that gets into the pipe or bucket of sealant. While clutter doesn’t have the same limitations as traditional flashing in terms of installation issues, they do have their drawbacks.

Some junk can’t be used in extreme weather, which is a drag for half of the US when it comes to the winter months. Come in the summer, extreme heat threatens some messes by making them too stretchy to use practically in certain states.

Although individually affordable, the material costs add up if you’re a growing installer. Some companies could spend between $ 15,000 and more than $ 90,000 ordinary chemical roof sealant per year. These are numbers that can pay for a much needed work car or the wages of a new employee.

We all know clutter works, we all use it. It has been used as a roofing material for longer than solar energy has existed. But it has its limitations. When it comes to choosing a mounting solution for your next job, why choose a solution that relies on chemical sealant when there is a better sealing method? That’s where BoltSeal ™ comes into the picture.

Let’s review the BoltSeal ™ definition: mechanical compression seal method. “Mechanical compression” are the keywords. You see, BoltSealed ™ powered Top mounts don’t rely on your usual chemical sealants to prevent water from entering the roof terminal. BoltSeal ™ does not depend on the seasons to be effective.
