How did you get started in solar energy?

I was originally hired by Moss in 2007 to build high-rises for the commercial side of Moss. The Moss team started getting involved in solar and I was asked in 2012 to build the solar industry and see where it could go. I was a little hesitant at first because of my background in architecture and original passion for commercial construction, but looking back, it was the best business decision I’ve ever made since the solar industry has just exploded in recent years. It has grown into one of the most dynamic and exciting industries to be in, and I am really proud of the culture and team we have built at Moss to meet the needs of our partners in the solar industry. .

What is your favorite part of working in the solar industry?

It’s an industry cliché to talk about the “solar coaster,” but it’s one of the things that makes the industry so exciting to be a part of it. The market is evolving and changing all the time. It makes work exciting, and as construction professionals we enjoy figuring out how we can evolve and improve what we do every day to make our work more efficient to best meet our client’s needs. Our continued growth is a testament to the growth of the industry, but most importantly our ability to deliver for our customers time and time again, providing them with a great experience and genuine partner they can trust in this industry.

What has surprised you most about the solar industry in the past 10 years?

When we first entered this market, it was strongly driven by a few key states like California in the west or New Jersey in the east with a special program to boost solar energy, but now, because of the continued rapid efficiency gains in solar energy, it is now widely recognized as the cheapest option for generating electricity. Therefore, solar energy is widely developed and deployed in essentially every state and region of this great nation.

What are your solar predictions for the next 10 years?

While there will always be twists and turns, such as the current challenges in the commodities market that the industry is seeing, it’s pretty clear that the market is really in the early stages of taking off. Many states have set clean energy targets and utilities across the country are moving quickly to convert energy portfolios into clean energy portfolios. In addition to the annual increase in the construction of new solar installations in the near future, we will also likely see more and more “old” projects being revived with more efficient modules and other equipment as the industry matures.

How did you/your company stand out in the past year?

The Moss team has gone from about 200 MW of projects built per year to about 2 GW of projects built per year within a two-year period, with much bigger goals per year ahead. That is a great achievement for our organization and I am immensely proud of the men and women who work hard every day to safely build the country’s clean energy future. For us, we truly believe that one of our key differentiators is our corporate culture. Moss is a family business and we are very proud that our work environment has always felt like a family. Being able to grow so far while preserving and even strengthening that culture is something I am extremely proud of.

How do you help improve the industry?

We understand that in order to meet the demands of the market, we must continue to provide our customers with the highest standards of quality and safety while remaining cost-effective. Our company is constantly working to ensure that we have the right systems and processes in place to reduce the cost of building solar projects. Another important area for Moss to drive improvements in the industry is through education. Moss does that through the universities by helping to create advanced solar curricula. Moss then follows that up with great internship opportunities that eventually lead to long-term career opportunities after college to build the next generation of strong solar leaders.
