TROY, Kan. (WIBW) – A roofer in Doniphan Co. has been temporarily banned, sentenced to pay more than $ 6,700 in restitution and more than $ 90,000 in civil fines.
Attorney General Derek Schmidt says a Doniphan County roofer has been temporarily banned from doing roofing business in Kansas and has to pay more than $ 6,700 in refunds after violating consumer laws in Kansas.
According to AG Schmidt, Rocky Murry of Troy, trading as Murry 66, was commissioned to refund a Doniphan Co. customer $ 6,760 and was temporarily ordered to work as a roofer in Kansas until he obtained a registration certificate from a roofer. He said District Judge James A. Patton was seeking default after Murry failed to respond to a lawsuit filed in April. He said Murry was also sentenced to pay a $ 90,000 civil fine.
Schmidt alleged that Murry accepted a customer’s payment for roofing services but did not complete the project and left part of the building without shingles. He said Murry also had not registered as a roofer with his office, as required by law.
Schmidt said he wants to remind clients to make sure roofers are properly registered before signing a contract or having work done. He said clients should request a copy of their roofer’s registration and then the AG’s security website to confirm that the roofer’s registration is in good standing.
