Tesla signs breakthrough deal to deploy solar roofs and Powerwalls on ‘large scale’ in the new community

Tesla has signed what could be described as a breakthrough agreement to deploy solar roofs and powerwalls on a “large scale” in a new community being built by Brookfield Asset Management and Dacra in Austin.

With the launch of the Tesla Solar Roof Tiles, the company not only sought to address the market of existing homes in need of a new roof, but also wanted to expand into the new home market.

Developments in that area are slow, but Tesla seems to be making breakthroughs lately.

Last month, Tesla struck a deal with real estate developer and new homebuilder Alset. EHome announced an agreement with Tesla to supply solar panels, Powerwall and electric vehicle chargers for 20 new homes being built in Porter, Texas.

Now Tesla Energy, the automaker’s energy division, has struck an even bigger deal with Brookfield and Dacra, two major real estate companies, to develop a new “large-scale” community with Tesla sunroofs and Powerwalls in all new homes:

“Tesla Energy, Brookfield Asset Management Inc. (“Brookfield” or “BAM”) (NYSE: BAM; TSX: BAM.A) and Dacra today announced a new initiative tentatively named SunHouse in Easton Park, the nation’s first Tesla Solar neighborhood and most sustainable residential community. . Combining Brookfield and Dacra’s real estate expertise with Tesla Energy’s innovative products and knowledge, the state-of-the-art sustainable features will be installed in phases to enable continuous learning and innovation.”

While the companies have not released the number of new homes envisaged, the project appears to be a significant development for Tesla Energy entering the new home market.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk even commented on the announcement:

“Neighborhood solar installations in all housing types will reshape the way people live. Brookfield and Dacra’s dedication to staying at the forefront of that evolution makes them the right collaborator for Tesla Energy. The feedback we get from the solar and battery products used in this community will influence how we develop and launch new products.”

The community is located in Austin, Texas, near the local international airport:

They confirmed that the first phase of installations already started last month, and they are starting with Tesla Solar Roof Tiles V3 and Powerwall 2 home battery packs.

Charging stations for electric vehicles and “complementary transport, technology and energy solutions”.

Brian Kingston, CEO of Brookfield’s Real Estate business, commented on the project:

“This initiative brings together multiple parts of our organization with innovative and forward-thinking partners committed to advancing the development of sustainable communities. As consumers increasingly seek energy security alongside sustainable living spaces, combining Tesla’s solar technology with Brookfield’s real estate development and renewable energy capabilities will help us meet the demand for environmentally friendly communities of the future.”

Tesla recently ran into some problems with the deployment of its solar roof tiles, which eventually got a significant price increase.

But the automaker still hopes to accelerate implementation to 1,000 new roofs per week by the end of the year.

New housing projects like this and those signed last month could greatly help achieve that goal, as the installation process is simpler and more easily scalable for new homes than for existing homes in need of a new roof.
