With Retractable Roofs and Expanding Beach Clubs, These Modular Yachts Are Like Convertibles for the Water
The concept of modular yacht design came to life in 2011 with the Wider 42, with sides that could be folded over the water, turning them into swim platforms while doubling cockpit space. Now three just launched sports yachts shows how far the multi-tool philosophy has evolved.
“We are fascinated by the concept of modularity because we give the customer more for less,” said Andrew Bartlett, Design Director for Tiara yachtsBartlett points to the “Euro-chaise” on Tiara’s new 48 LS, a sturdy, almost fully radiant lounge that can rotate in multiple positions, up to 180 degrees, as it moves forward and backward. It is rear-facing and a launch pad for swimming or sunbathing; turned forward, it fits snugly against the cockpit table for alfresco dining. “With a simple twist you enlarge the teak beach at the back,” he says. “This single feature can drastically change the boat’s layout within the same footprint.”

Formula boatsThe 500 SSC is the largest, most advanced sports yacht in the American builder’s series and features electronically controlled top panels to open the ceiling at the touch of a button, and sliding doors and windows for panoramic views of the deck. When it comes back in, the Formula buttons will be active again in seconds. The 500 SSC also includes removable tables in different spaces, plus modular stools in the galley, to spontaneously create social zones on board.
Another rapidly changing artist is the Swan ShadowFeaturing the elegant lines of the Finnish builder’s race-bred sailing yachts, the 43-foot yacht is the first motor yacht built with the Swan brand name. The boat’s lead designer, Jarkko Jämsén, says that “a lot of thought has gone into the lifestyle and different usage scenarios,” meaning a rudder area can be configured both open and closed, and “a bolt-on system that allows for multiple furniture layouts. -outs. ” The shadow works as an open deck tender for a Swan sailing yacht, a stand-alone day boat with lounges or a sport fishing vessel. The multifunctional swim platform can also be lifted in three positions.
In addition to versatility, all three boats are designed for performance. With triple 350 horsepower outboards, the Shadow has an expected top speed of 100 km / h, while the larger Tiara is still reaching 100 km / h thanks to its trio of 600 horsepower Mercury Verados. And Formula, with its four Verados, reached during Robb report ‘s recent visit to Mercury’s Secret Lake X test facility outside of Orlando, Fla.
