Many companies will provide incentives to attract new customers.

But a Powell company is putting a new spin on the practice – by offering a free rifle for every new roof.

Matt Thomas, marketing director for Wiggins Construction in Powell, said his company has noticed that a number of people have moved to Wyoming from other states to enjoy a level of freedom they may not have felt in their home state.

So Thomas said Wiggins’ owners thought giving away something unique – like an AR-15 rifle – could spark some interest and give them an edge over their competition.

“People are moving to Wyoming to get out of the cities and get away from the regulations and to get away from living in fear,” said Thomas. “We’re just offering it almost as if, to the people who recently moved to Wyoming as a ‘Welcome to Wyoming’ gift, and to the people who are here, the locals, just a ‘thank you’ for doing business. “

Through the promotion, Wiggins gives an AR-15 to anyone who has the company place a roof on their residential or business premises. The AR (which stands for ArmaLite Rifle) is a semi-automatic rifle that can be configured to use a variety of ammunition, but usually uses .223 caliber bullets.

And it is a promotion that is sure to draw attention. Thomas said the company has received very keen feedback on its offer.

“We’ve gotten quite a shit about it,” he said. “I don’t know how this story ended up in New Hampshire, Chicago, Illinois and central California. But we get phone calls, voicemails from people saying all kinds of negative things about us, you know, things like “baby killers,” spreading weapons of mass destruction to the public.

“But here it is,” Thomas continued. “None of these people are locals who really say this. The response from the real crowd and locals has been phenomenal – we probably got three voicemails from people this morning like ‘Hey, we don’t need a roof, but we saw your ad in the Powell Tribune and we just want to say it’s great , and we really support what you guys do. ‘”

The promotion began on April 12, and Thomas said the company has already booked more than 15 roofing membranes, with the goal of booking 150 more by the end of the promotion.

“So as long as our government doesn’t do anything to stop us from buying more guns to give away, we expect maybe 150 to 200 gun giveaways by the end of the year,” Thomas said.

But he noted that the promotion shouldn’t be seen as a shortcut for people looking for a way to get their hands on a semi-automatic rifle – there are very important rules and regulations that the company follows.

“Even though Wyoming is the only state in the United States that doesn’t have gun transfer laws,” Thomas said, “we just want to make sure everything we did was above par. that (the customer) is over the age of 21, that they are not a convicted felon, and that they agree to obey all state and federal firearms laws.

“And then they sign that form, and we take the rifle’s serial number and write it on the transfer of ownership form,” he added.

Thomas said that while the promotion is targeted by firearms enthusiasts, the company did not come up with the idea of giving guns away to capitalize on people’s fears.

“When the government says, ‘Hey, this is no longer legal,’ we quit our promotion – we want to be above size and so on, ” he said.“ We just wanted something tangible to put in their hands, other than just a thank you card. “
